The most simple and delicious cake you can make and part of the French culture is a gateau au yaourt or in English, yogourt cake. It’s the chameleon of cakes quite honestly. Taking on any flavour and taste you want. It’s a child’s cake mostly. The simplicity of this recipe is a good one for children to do. A small task that they can create on their own. We have made this with plain yogourt and with flavoured. Fruit, no fruit. We’ve made it a cake, a loaf and muffins. You can even add chocolate. This is inspiration cake. Take this base and make it your masterpiece! All you have to remember is 3, 2, 1!

Gateau au Yaourt

  • 1 yogourt pot, you will use this for most of your measurements so don’t toss it!
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • dash of salt
  • 3 filled yogourt pots filled with flour
  • 2 filled yogourt pots of sugar
  • 1 filled yogourt pot of oil

In a bowl of your choosing dump in your yogourt pot. Mix with the two eggs. Toss in the rest of your ingredients. Voila! Now if you are using fruit, slightly mix the ingredients and then gently fold in the fruit, you don’t want to over mix. You can use oil of your choosing and how much sugar you want. I often put in 1.5 pots of sugar as I normally only have flavoured yogourt on hand. I use light olive oil or coconut oil, because it’s in the pantry. Play with it! It’s such a simple, lovely cake!
